A beacon of hope on the Matterhorn

3 April 2020

The Matterhorn is being lit up every evening until the 19 April as a “sign of hope” in the fight against the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The initiative is being promoted by the Municipality of Zermatt (Switzerland) and was designed by the artist Gerry Hofstetter.

The slopes of the Matterhorn will be lit up from sunset until 11 pm. The sight will also be visible through webcams located around the mountain. “Society needs to be as strong as the Matterhorn,” write the municipal authorities in Zermatt, “in order to overcome the storm we are facing. Light was chosen because it represents hope.” (source: ANSA, Italian National Press Agency)
